Decarbonisation of islands: A multi-criteria decision analysis platform and application

In this paper the REACT-DECARB energy planning platform, designed to assist with assessment of decarbonisation scenarios for islands’ electricity grids, is fully presented and applied eight (8) EU islands. The were developed in context a Horizon 2020 project employing renewable production forecasting an optimisation mixed-integer linear programming model. platform employs economic modules, life-cycle multi-criteria decision analysis facilitate integrated evaluation enables makers grasp technical, environmental, social aspects systems’ decarbonisation. Results indicate that island electrical autonomy should be considered caution can valid option only if cost criteria are not prioritised. Further, it was determined seeking countries low carbon costs may environmentally beneficial. A number inter-island comparisons have been made shown planners decision-makers identify best available scenarios, define sensitivity issues respect weights and, together local communities, come common ground order establish roadmap transition towards decarbonised future
